5 days in the boomy room... with my favorite pet
Sometimes people meet, start jamming and after few days of threshing the shit out of their instruments, all that remains is a fancy collection of colorful extravaganza and two smiling faces. I guess you call that chemistry.
Schnaak is Mathias Jähnig and Johannes Döpping. Just them, yes. A duo, yes. Sorry for that, dear genre-prophets!
They met in February 2008 for the first time to make some unpretentious noise… Mathias is known as the singer/guitarist of German Jazzcore-Hipsters THE SEASON STANDARD – in Schnaak he plays an old mazy-tuned guitar with a bass-string and beats the bucket while looping a guitar-sound. Johannes primarily delivers his amazing skills to the subjazzed Noiserock of TARENTATEC and OSIS KRULL – in Schnaak he can mime the ruthless supertight killergroove-mescalito on the drums. No, he actually is not a machine.
To have some variety from their main-projects they joined forces for a week, after 5 days in the “boomy room” they crafted 5 amazing songs. Soon they played their first shows and festivals in Middle-Europe for thrilled and perplex audiences. Schnaak became notorious for their live-sets very fast and every time you could hear the same Chinese whisper in the crowds: "Where is the hidden bass, the second drum-set, the three additional guitars and synthesizers? Behind the stage? Holy shit, this is a duo!!!"
It was very obvious that the first Schnaak-EP has to be recorded live in front of an audience, so they decided to record two Berlin-shows on tape. So they did… and “women on ships are bad luck” is the result. For the first time with some vocals and sound-manipulations, but still incredibly rough and direct. No aggressive designed Noisecore, more like a roly-poly Blissdeer grinning at a rainbow while dancing on plum butter. Yeah, quite exactly like that… uhm.
Schnaak play unique Experimental Noiserock – with a weird blend of funny Jazz-licks, strange African rhythms and an incredibly tight Hardcore-energy… two-piece-madness somewhere between Hella, Captain Beefheart, Battles and Sun Ra.
For the present Schnaak is the ultimate* stage of Noiseduo-development. Any challengers?
